Somers, New York
The town of Somers, New York was originally called "Stephentown" in 1788. The name was changed to Somerstown to avoid confusion with another New York location, and in 1808, the town took its present name. Somers has approximately 18,350 residents. Somers is 32.3 square miles with the northern town line on the border of Putnam County.
The Town of Somers is known as the home of the "Elephant Motel", created by Hachaliah Bailey (Barnum and Bailey) to honor an elephant in the 1800's known as "Old Bet." The town purchased the hotel in 1927 and in 2005 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. The Elephant Motel is now houses the Somers Town Hall and Justice Court.
Muscoot Farm, a farm museum on Route 100 in Somers, is a popular attraction with displays of farm animals and historic implements. Muscoot also provides hiking trails and is operated by the County of Westchester.
