Ossining, New York
The village of Ossining, New York has approximately 24,000 residents. In 1685, the village was named for the Indian tribe Sinck Sinck, which means "stone upon stone." In 1825, construction of the Sing Sing Correctional Facility started. When President Garfield was assassinated in 1881, the village discussed changing its name to Garfield Plains, but after objections by the City of White Plains, that idea was rejected.
In 1901, when Sing Sing Correctional Facility stared becoming more notorious for its famous and dangerous occupants, (the legendary gangster Al Capone was incarcerated at Sing Sing several years later) the name of the village was changed to Ossining to avoid a negative implication for the village.
