The village of Pleasantville, New York has approximately 7,000 residents. Pleasantville is about 31 miles north of mid town Manhattan. It was settled in 1695 and originally known as Clark's Corners until the late 1800's. Pleasantville was reputedly once a stop on the "Underground Railroad", a safe house for slaves seeking their freedom.
The village is one of the homes of Pace University, and the Jacob Burns Film Center. Jacob Burns is a non-profit theater established in 2001, offering independent and documentary films and hosting speakers including director Oliver Stone, comedian Robert Klein and author Stephen King. Playwright Lillian Hellman called Pleasantville home in the 1940's and 1950's, and more recently, singer Tina Turner and actress Debra Winger have lived in Pleasantville.
