The Town of Yorktown, New York was settled in 1683, and became incorporated in 1788. Yorktown is on the northern border of Westchester County, is approximately 40 square miles, and has about 36,000 residents. Yorktown is 38 miles north of midtown Manhattan.

The town was named in honor of a Revolutionary war battle fought in Yorktown, Virginia on October 19, 1781. The Croton River runs through the southern part of the town. The Croton Dam was established in 1842 by New York City to provide a reliable source of drinking water.

Yorktown has the multifaceted Teatown Reservation, a 730 mile nature preserve with 14 miles of hiking trails. There are various events held throughout the year for adults and children alike providing a close up look at the variety of wildlife in the area. The Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve contains 125 acres and spectacular views of the Croton Reservoir Dam, Bear Mountain, the Hudson River and the New York City skyline.

The North County Trailway is a paved pedestrian 22.1 mile bike path from Eastview in Mt. Pleasant to Baldwin Place in the Town of Somers. Construction is underway to extend a southern trailway from Mt. Pleasant for an additional 14 miles. The Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park has fishing, boating, a large swimming pool with room for thousands of visitors, and extensive picnic areas.
