Carmel, New York

The Town of Carmel is located on the southern border of Putnam County, adjacent to the northern border of Westchester County. As of the 2000 US Census, there were 36,465 residents of the town. Carmel is 40.7 square miles. The Town of Carmel is roughly 50 miles from New York's Central Park. Carmel was settled in 1740. On April 26, 1777, 16 year old Sybil Ludington became an instant legend and hero when she rode her horse through several towns in the County warning residents that "The British Are Coming!" Ms. Ludington is honored with a statue on Gleneida Avenue in town center.

In 1814, the original Putnam County Courthouse in Carmel was built. Next door to the historic courthouse is the new courthouse, which was completed in 2008. Unlike baseball stadiums, however, the good news is that the original remains in all its glory. In the center of Carmel, is Lake Gleneida, which was formed by ice age glaciers! For those of you who are visiting Carmel for the first time, remember that the town pronounces its' name "Carmel", with the emphasis on the first three letters, different than Carmel in California, where the name is pronounced "Carmel", with the emphasis on the last three letters instead.
