The City of Middletown is in Orange County, New York. According to the US Census in 2000, there were 25,388 residents of Middletown. Middletown was settled in 1744. Early in the last century, factories were a major part of the commerce in Middletown, including furniture, shoe and lawnmower blade companies. By the early 1960’s most of these factories had closed down.
The Orange County Fair is held in Middletown each summer, with rides, various foods, and races at the Orange County Speedway. The city has two major shopping malls, including the Galleria at Crystal Run. Not to be forgotten is the historic Paramount Theater, which features concerts, lectures, films and exhibits, an Art Deco structure built in the 1930’s. The Paramount is one of two built at this same time, with the other Paramount Theater in Peekskill, New York. In 2002, the theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
