Nyack, New York
The Village of Nyack is in the southern section of Rockland County and is only 19 miles from the northern border of Manhattan. According to the last census in 2000, there were 6.737 residents of the village. The village is 1.6 square miles. Nyack is named for the Nyack Indians, who lived in the region before colonialization. The village has mostly low rise buildings, and is on the other side of the Hudson River across from Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County. In the 1800’s and the early to mid 20th century, the village had three main industries: sandstone quarrying for construction of New York City buildings in the early 19th century; boatmaking including WW2 era submarines until the mid 20th century; and shoe manufacturing from the early part of the 19th century until 1900.
In 1955, the opening of the Tappan Zee Bridge in 1955 connected Westchester County to Rockland County, substantially increasing the population of the county. In the 1980’s, there was a major reconstruction of Nyack. New restaurants, shops and art galleries are now in abundance, and at the Helen Hayes Theatre, fans of all ages can watch movies, concerts and shows.
