Newburgh, New York
The City of Newburgh is known for its magnificent location along the west bank of the Hudson River. There are approximately 28,000 residents of the city based upon a recent US Census. The city is in between the Town of Newburgh and the Town of New Windsor in Orange County. Henry Hudson reportedly stated that: "this is a pleasant place to build a town" during his 1609 expedition up the Hudson River. In 1786, Captain Thomas Mackin minted the first coins to say "E Pluribus Unum" in Newburgh. The city of Newburgh was originally incorporate as a village in 1800 and became a city in 1865.
Newburgh was the first American city to be electrified in the early 20th century, and one of the first American cities to fluoridate its' water. In October of 1939, RCA selected Newburgh to test market TV's, selling 600 very inexpensively in the city. Newburgh lost substantial shipping traffic to trucking in 1963 when the Newburgh Beacon Bridge opened. Famous residents of Newburgh are former US Congressperson and VP candidate Geraldine Ferraro, artist Ellsworth Kelly, and best selling author James Patterson.
