Poughkeepsie, New York
The City of Poughkeepsie is 5.7 square miles and is in Dutchess County, in between New York City and Albany. The population of the city as of the 2000 US Census was 29,871. Poughkeepsie was the second capital of the State of New York. The city was chartered in 1854 after originally being incorporated as a village. In 1788, the Ratification Convention attended by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and George Clinton ratified New York as the 11th of the original 13 colonies. In the 1800's, whale rendering was a huge business in Poughkeepsie, and shipping, hatting, and breweries flourished. In fact, some of these breweries were owned by Matthew Vassar—who was immortalized by the college that now bears his name in the city.
Poughkeepsie is also the home of Marist College, Dutchess Community College and the CIA, the training ground for chefs renowned throughout the United States and beyond. The Astors and Vanderbilts had weekend homes in Poughkeepsie in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Famous residents of Poughkeepsie include Sterling Morrison, the lead guitarist of the Velvet Underground, CBS News Reporter Dave Price, and ironically, G. Gordon Liddy, an important figure in the Watergate during the Nixon Administration, was an Assistant District Attorney in Dutchess County.
