Mahopac, New York

Mahopac is located in the Town of Carmel in Putnam County. It is approximately 5.3 square miles. The hamlet is about 47 miles north of New York City. Mahopac was originally the home of an Algonquin tribe, the Wappinger Native Americans. During the American Revolutionary War, Mahopac played a vital part as a central location for troops in nearby Patterson, Yorktown and West Point.

Mahopac expanded after the Putnam County was incorporated in 1812. In the mid- 1800's, the hamlet was a popular summer vacation spot. The New York Central Railroad would bring NYC residents to Croton Falls, where they would then get on horse drawn carriages for the short trip to Lake Mahopac. Long time residents of Mahopac often pronounce the name "Ma HO pac", although it is also pronounced as "MAY o pac."
