Bedford, New York

The town of Bedford is located in Westchester County. There are approximately 18,000 residents of the town as of the last US Census in 2000. The town of Bedford has a total area of 39.3 square miles. Bedford was founded on December 23, 1680 when Chief Katonah sold a 3 mile tract of land to 22 Puritans for cloth, wampum, and other items.

Bedford was part of Connecticut between 1697 and 1700. That year, King William of England ordered that Connecticut and New York resolve their boundary dispute, and Bedford was returned to the State of New York. During the American Revolutionary War, Bedford was the county seat in Westchester County. The oldest government building in Westchester County is the Bedford Court House, opening in 1787 and renovated in the 1960s.

Notable residents of the town include the clothing designer Joseph Abboud, actor and comic Chevy Chase, David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer, and Martha Stewart.
