Dutchess County, New York
Dutchess County is in the mid-Hudson region of New York State. The population of Dutchess County in 2007 was 292,706. The Supreme Court is located in Poughkeepsie. Dutchess County is 825 square miles, with 802 of those miles being land and the remainder water. The county is approximately halfway between Albany and New York City.
1683, the Province of New York had twelve original counties, and Dutchess County was part of those twelve. The county was named for Mary of Modena, the Duchess of York, who was James II's (King of England) second wife. In the late 1600's and early 1700's, settlers in Dutchess County were mainly Dutch and settled in what is now Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt grew up in Hyde Park. Roosevelt's family home is a national historic site open to the public. In the 1960's, G. Gordon Liddy (later involved in the Watergate break in to Democratic Headquarters), was an assistant district attorney in Dutchess County who often tried to prosecute the legendary Timothy Leary on drug charges.
The minor league affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, the Hudson Valley Renegades, play their home games at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill.
