Orange County, New York

Orange County is in the mid- Hudson Valley region of the State of New York. The county was named in honor of William III of Orange, who was held in high esteem by the original settlers of Orange County. The county was one of the original twelve established in 1683 as part of the Province of New York. The first Court in Orange County was created in 1801.

Orange County is north of the New Jersey -New York border and northwest of New York City. Orange County borders three states--Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Sullivan, and Ulster in New York, Sussex and Passaic in New Jersey, and Pike County in Pennsylvania. Orange is the sole New York county which borders on the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. According to US Census data in 2000, the population of Orange County was 341,367.

Orange County has a total area of 839 square miles, of which 816 square miles are land. There are many tourist attractions in Orange County, including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; the Orange County Fair in Middletown; the Brotherhood Winery, which is the oldest winery in the United States; the birthplace of William H. Seward, the U.S. Secretary of State under President Abe Lincoln, in Florida, New York; the Harness Racing Museum Hall of Fame in Goshen; and Sterling Forest State Park.

Orange County can boast that President George Washington made the county his home at one time, and most recently, the county has been home to Geraldine Ferraro, Gen. David Petraeus, actors Barry Bostwick and Armand Assante and authors James Patterson and Stephen Crane.
