Putnam County, New York
Putnam County was established in 1812 and is in the lower Hudson Valley region of New York. Originally, Putnam County was a section of Dutchess County. However, due to the great distance to Poughkeepsie and the increasing size of Dutchess County, Putnam became a separate county in 1812.
In 2004, the population of Putnam County was a slightly more than 100,000. Putnam County was named after Israel Putnam, an American Revolutionary War general and hero of the French and Indian War.
Putnam County is 246 square miles in size. The County seat is in Carmel. Putnam is traditionally a "red" county, with a large majority of the county registered Republicans. There have been a few Democratic victories in Putnam County, including Eliot Spitzer's gubernatorial victory over Republican John Faso in 2006. In the presidential arena, only Woodrow Wilson in 1912 and Lyndon Jonson in 1964 prevailed in Putnam County.
Putnam County is in the southeastern part of New York State. On the west side of the county is the Hudson River and on the east is the New York-Connecticut border. The two large highways in Putnam County are Interstate 84, connecting to I-684 by the Connecticut border, and the Taconic Parkway, which runs through the center of the county. Putnam County has 4 school districts, with the largest in the Town of Mahopac.
