Westchester County is a suburban county of New York which is approximately 450 square miles and has a population of 950,000 in its 45 municipalities. John Jay, who was the first chief justice of United States Supreme Court, and is the only founding father native to New York State, grew up in Rye, New York. Jay's boyhood home is now open to the public as a National Historic Landmark. During the Revolutionary War, Westchester County was the site of numerous battles and saw more action than almost any other location in the U.S. The American headquarters was in Putnam County and the British had their headquarters in New York City.
The Croton Dam and Aqueduct was constructed between 1837 and 1842. The aqueduct brought water 41 miles from Croton to two reservoirs in Manhattan to be distributed throughout New York City. The reservoirs were located on what is now the Great Lawn in Central Park and the New York Public Library. The Aqueduct has become a historic landmark and is thought to be among the best engineering achievements of the 19th century.
The famous newspaperman Horace Greeley, who published the now defunct The New York Tribune, lived in Chappaqua and his house remains there. Greeley ran for president against Ulysses S. Grant in the second half of the 19th century and garnered only sixty electoral votes. Mr. Greeley's home and the grounds are open for guided and self-guided tours run by the Town of North Castle.
