Rockland County, New York

Rockland County is in New York State a short distance north of New York City. The northern boundary of Manhattan in Inwood is just 9.5 miles from the southern border of Rockland County in Palisades, New York. Rockland County's population is approximately 286,000 as of the 200 US Census.

The Rockland Supreme Court is in New City. The county's name comes from the description "rocky land", given by the original settlers of the region. Rockland has a total area of 199 square miles with 174 miles being land.

Rockland is the 9th wealthiest county by median household income in the U.S––$75,306 as of 2004 US Census. The county was originally inhabited by the Indian tribes Munsees, or Lenni Lenape. In 1609, when Hendrick Hudson sailed up the river that would later have his name, he thought he had discovered the legendary Northwest Passage, and anchored near Haverstraw.

Legendary slugger Babe Ruth starred in a film called Heading Home in 1920 and was in scenes shot in Haverstraw and Valley Cottage. Some 50 years later, Bruce Springsteen recorded his first two albums in 1973 in the Village of Blauvelt.
